the dasies are sprouting...

and so are my other seeds. there are pots and yogurt containers and little tin cans full of sprouts sprinkled all over the house. i think it looks rather cute, but my kitten does seem a little annoyed that all of the sunny spots on the window sills are filled with dirt in every container imaginable...where is she to sit?

so yes, the seeds from my incredible package from the coffee and yarn swap are sprouting. i can't wait to have little dasies!

now, if only there were some of those yummy biscotti left - i think i shall learn to make those. i miss them with my morning coffee!

it's coming....

Toadstool Swap

this swap looks like a fun one http://lucykatecrafts.blogspot.com/2008/05/toot-toot.html i think i'll join

A Fun Day at the Prison

we went to a play put on by some of the men at the nearby federal prison. the longest running drama program at a federal prison in Canada, and the only federal prison in the country that allows people from the "street" (what they call us on the outside of the prison walls) to come and partake in the play. they always choose really amazing plays, quite topical to prison life. this year they put on a great production, both thoughtful and entertaining, of Beckett's Waiting for Godot. they've had trouble in the past keeping the program running, so it's great to be able to go and support this amazing program, as well as see some great acting. it's always an exerience, and one that has me thinking about the lives these men live in prison, as well as the system that controls their every moves. one of the actors has been at this particular prison for ten years. i can't even imagine living in the same house for that long. something to think about.

Spring fling coffee and yarn swap

Wow! My partner Megan http://kniteurope.blogspot.com/ was the sweetest, most generous partner ever and really made this swap fun for me. The box was brimming over with so many goodies, and my bf and i had so much fun on a Sunday morning going opening up each little present and eating many of the goodies...and of course drinking the yummy rich coffee out of brand new mugs. i have to get my camera working so i can post some pics, because there were some really fun and pretty things in this box. you can see a picture of the sweet daisies that she sent me on her blog. there are also some seeds and tiny pots to plant for lavender and dasies that i am going to plant and put on my windowsill this afternoon. there are too many fun things to post, so i'll try to get my camera fixed today!

Megan, you really brightened my Spring! Thank you so much!

Topic #s 4 and 5

I am going to answer topic #4 even though that week has past, because it is something i love to dream about.

Topic #4
Let's pretend for a minute we all live in the home of our dreams, have land, and don't have to work so time is unlimited! It's Spring planting season! What would you grow? A little veggie garden? A bed of bright spring blooms? Or is your thumb so far from green that the only thing you'd be planting is your tushy into a nice chair on the porch to get some knitting or crocheting done in the nice breeze?

I could answer this one forever, and end up writing a book on the garden of my dreams, but really I hsould get out and plant seeds today instead. I can't wait to have the land to grow a huge veggie garden. I learned all about no dig gardening two years ago, and have since met some inspirational friends that are amazing subsistence gardeners, so this garden-in-my-mind has been a long time in the making. right now it is kept comtained to as many pots as i can fit inside the house wihtout it taking over (or taking up precious stash space that is), and our fire escape, which incidentally holds a lot of pots!

if i had all the time and space in the world, i would grow a beautiful big garden, chock full of delicious herbsm vegetables and fruits...and maybe some grains too, planted in succession so that i could make the most use of my garden. all around the edges i plan to grow comfrey as a living compost.

i also need to grow feed for my imagined flock of fiber animals - a few mohair goats, some angora bunnies and some sheep - rigt nowi'm thinking jacob, but that could change.

i would also love to have a seperate tea garden, and another dyeng garden. a small cut flower garden would be perfect for hostess gifts, as i mostly like living plants inside rather than cut flowers. on either side of the gate and front door would be huge rosemary and lavender plants, growing up over the edges of the path a bit, so that when you passed by they released their yummy scents. a small orchard of apples for cider (the hard kind - yum), and plums for stewing, which is may favorite sauce oer ice cream.

a huge native plant garden would round of my fantasy (for now) garden. blackberries are one of my favorite treats, and they grow rampant around here. there are also a lot of great local medicinal plants, like Oregon Grape, a good substitute for the over-harvested goldenseal, and many others. i would love a few mature trees around here - a cedar, an arbutus (madrone in the States) and a willow.

i could go on and on...can you tell i've thought of this a lot? :)

Topic #5

You know with Spring the famous saying goes "April Showers, bring May flowers", please tell us what you like to do when those April Showers are pouring down on you. Do you like to curl up with your knitting, take in a movie or crawl back in bed?

I grew up on the wet west coast, so I actually love the rain (I think your options are either that, or live rather depressed as it rains a lot!). I do like curling up with knitting or a good book in front of a fire when it's raining, but I also love to go hiking in the forest, as we have beautiful rain forests here that can actually stay fairly dry underneath all of the lush canopy. i like riding my bike in the rain too - that's something i haven't done in a while. i love hot bubble baths on cold, wet days too. it's actually sunny today though, so i think i'll head out into this beautiful day...must do some birthday shopping for my little bro today!

i'm still here!

i've had the yuckiest spring cold, and just managing to go to work and a few shows, and not much else! i came back to find that i won a topic of the week for the spring fling coffee and yarn swap...what fun!

all of this sleepy down time has led to lots of knitting! i'm making an avril shrug from Pretty Knits: 30 Designs from Loop in London, a beautiful book if you haven't seen it. i am using a pretty kid Lincoln/Angora handspun lace from Laine Zin Zin http://www.lainezinzin.com/ called Esperance

i think this cardi/shrug will be sweet and warm, if a bit fluffy from the angora. it's knit in a pretty flower lace, and i haven't made a mistake yet! i'll have about two hours of ferry kntting time tonight too, because i'm going over to the cabin for my little bro's birthday (can we still call them little when they are 26?). can't wait to wear this one!

Spring Fling Topic #3

Tell us how you started drinking coffee. Were you in high school or college and making it through all nighters? Did you get it from a family member? What drives your love of the bean?

I started drinking coffee in highschool, when my best friend had a boyfriend that was 19. We figured going to Starbucks was cool, so we both started drinking coffee black (to be uber-cool). Since then, I have drank coffee on and off. When I am in University, like I am right now, I definately rely on coffee. I love it when I am backpacking too. I drank some wildly thick, syrupy coffees while backpacking in Europe the last time -that really inspired my love of dark, thick, rich coffees. I love the taste of coffee, but also love how it wakes me up. I think I love everything about coffee actually...

Spring Fling Coffee and Yarn Swap Topic Of The Week #2

The question: Have you put away the hats, scarfs and mittens, and brought out the cute tank top sweater projects and lacy wraps? Have you change yarn to something more lighter and cooler, not so heavy and bulky?

The sun was out all day today, it is warming up enough for a light jacket. I still wear a scarf, but more because I am stubborn and want to wear knits as long as possible on this warm west coast, than because I really need one.

I am knitting with lighter, spring yarns. I have pastel-colored monkey socks on the needles, a felted Noni purse in fresh spring greens and pinks, and a few other spring yarns on the needles too - like knitpicks shine, a cool cotton/tencel blend.

All that said, I pick yarns for their seasonal color more than their weight. In the spring, I knit spring colors, in the autum my favorites - plums, rich browns, olives.

And, I am still holding on to a few winter-weight projects. I have prairie boots on the needles in brown sheep lamb's pride because my wood floors are still very chilly and I live in an old drafty house.

All this talk makes me want to knit, but I am spinning up some pretty april showers bulky yarn for a ravelry spin-along. I really have to get my camera hooked up to my computer!

i hope my boyfriend likes purple angora

because it's all over his room. this stuff really flies around, like little bunnies with wings. i've spent my first two days of university break spinning an enormous angora/alpaca batt from crystal creek fibers and it is beautiful! it has inspired me to get my wheel working though, because as relaxing as spindle spinning is, it sure takes time. and i don't really have time, considering the size of my fiber stash...no room left for it, therefore, must spin more. i think i like this equation.

now i wonder what to make with 10 ounces of worsted weight purple-y angora?

must get the camera hooked up to the computer so i can post pictures of this beautiful stuff

Spring Fling Coffee and Yarn Weekly Topic #1

this is so much more fun that writing the essay i have to finish tonight for my Introduction to Indigenous Issues course. i found out that Tanja B.'s idea of a perfect cup of coffee is almost exactly the same as mine: americano with a bit of cream on the beach with family and a yummy muffin. sounds perfect, and exactly what i am going to do tomorrow morning (my first day of a month break from school!). i also discovered that Frances S. describes the perfect sup of coffee - "the stronger and darker the better!". yum! she is also making a pinwheel sweater, which i am also making for the first baby in my cicle of friends. okay, time to stop reading blogs (and looking at all of the beautiful pictures of incredible knitting...and snow! people still have snow!) and back to the essay.

spring cleaning

time to sort through the baskets, boxes, bags of UFO's and WIP's, and sort them. it only took an hour, once i dumped everything out on to the living room floor. because i have SO MANY (i am pro at starting things, then when i get stuck or have a new idea, tucking it away so that i can pretend that it isn't there, and starting another thing) i sorted them in to seasons. i have a spring bag in my bedroom (craft central until we get a bigger house and i can have my own craft room) and the other three seasons packed away in a box downstairs. i also organized my ravelry queue, and made a space for all the ziplocs of yarn and patterns i have laying around to start. the idea is that i have to work my way through the season's projects before starting anything new on my queue. there will be a few exceptions - i need a new spring cardi cause our house is near the water and the spring storms are chilly! so far i frogged three pairs of socks that didn't fit, a whole bunch of other little projects i did when i first started knitting, and finished a few pairs of socks and Wisp. it feels good to be working my way through this stuff. maybe i should do this in all areas of my life! ;)

what did you do for st paddys day?

cause i saw saul williams. what a powerful show. he played most of my favorite songs, and the crowd was incredible - supportive and having fun. i love when crowds come together..makes for a fun night.

i was sick, so i stuck to drinking scotch - and it worked! the next morning i woke up and my cold had been killed by that great stuff. we walked back across the granville street bridge after the show, and the city was pretty quiet. walking through cities at night is one of my favorite things to do...so i thoroughly enjoyed it.

in the morning we borrowed my moms discount card for the bookstore. (we were lucky enough to have their whole downtown apartment to ourselves for the weekend). DB found a bio of hunter s thompson written by his close friend and i chose a beginning book on weaving, which i keep leafing through to look at all of the beautiful fibers! i can't wait to get my loom working!

what a wonderful st paddys day. i feel like a good irish girl.

immortal techniqe was incredible!

soooo amazing. even more than i expected. quite a unique crowd...a bit of a mix of hip hop and punk kids. when my BF asked me what i wanted to do this year for my birthday, as i turn 30 this summer, i said "see immortal technique", and the show lived up to that leve of importance! it was amazing to see in person someone that is so passionate about social justice. he looks like a man not to be messed with - a result i'm sure of growing up in harlem...i'm just glad that we are on the same side!

i have already begun to plan the next time i can see him...

the hotel was lovely to. we stayed at the Ace hotel in belltown - my favorite neighborhood in seattle. much more comfortable and comparable price to the hostel. pics to follow.

Tuesday, March 11, 2008

we are off to seattle

we're heading down across the border to see immortal technique. i can't wait. i love seattle. DH-2B is worried i think - he's never left canada...we're staying at the Ace hotel - looks like a great place, and near my fave record shop and bookstore. when i get home, i'll get the camera hooked up to the computer...finally!

5. Do you enjoy flavored coffees? How about add-ins or flavored creamers? if the flavors are natural i like them, mostly the liquer falvors (kaluha and such)

6. A large, lovely mug or a small, dainty cup? big pottery mugs i find at thrift stores

7. Describe your perfect cup - not JUST the coffee, but how you'd enjoy it! dark coffee, a bit of brown sugar, sitting out on my fire escape watching the sun rise

8. You're sitting down to enjoy a nice cup in the local coffee shop, knitting bag in hand, iPod all tuned up - or maybe you're there with a few friends for knit night! What treat do you pick up to enjoy with your coffee? A sweet, rich brownie, or something more healthy? How about a salty treat? What goes best with that great cup and company? a spicy sweet pumpkin square, or almond crossant

Yarn

1. Do you knit or crochet? I knit and spin

2. What are your favorite types of yarns to work with? mohair or alpaca of any type, but i like anything that is natural (not acrylic)

4. What are your favorite colors in yarns? What about those that you'd never find in your stash? favorites right now are purple and greys, and any dark rich color...i don't have/want any beige, yellow, orange (other than pumpkin), many light colors

5. What sort of needles or hooks do you enjoy using? Any you just detest? i really just use bamboo other than for circs

6. Are there any particular notions you absolute do NOT need? Some of us swap a lot - are you sure that you have enough tape measures to last your lifetime? Enough stitch markers to mark every stitch of a 10 foot wide afghan? i don't think so

7. You walk into the yarn shop and have exactly and only enough money to purchase 2 skeins of yarn in their 2 for 20 special they have going..The choices are a soft, thick cotton/viscose blend in your favorite colors, slightly variegated..a beautiful sock yarn that's just squishy and sproingy in your hands.. a soft, worsted weight wool like malabrigo.. and a lovely bamboo blend with colors to just die for. Which do you walk out the door with? malabrigo, but it was a hard choice between that and the bamboo

Spring

1. We're starting sign-ups on the first day of Spring - is it already truly Spring-like where you are? i'm on the west coast - the daffodils have been out for weeks!

2. What's your favorite spring flower? Do you have one? i love all of them, but the snowdrops are pretty, and so are the wildflowers...i love any little sprouts that are growing though

4. They've predicted a gorgeous day tomorrow - Sunny and about 65 with a nice breeze - how do you spend your day? climbing over the rocks on the beach then sitting and looking out over the ocean with a warn drink, wearing a light hand-knit sweater

5. The day after, it's going to be cooler and pouring down rain - does that impact your mood? How do you spend that day? what helps cheer you up? i don't mind the rain, and would go out for a hike in the forest where it stays a it drier, but i would cheer up with a hot bath, fire and knitting or spinning

5. List 3 of your favorite blogs - craft related or not - and tell us why you love them. Hello Yarn, brooklyn tweed and fig and plum for the beautiful photography, amazing knitting and yummy recipies!

and so it begins....

ahh...the big first day, and i've been up since 5:30...not my usual time as those that know me can attest. i'm more of a stay in bed until 9-kinda girl, a luxury i try to maintain as fundamental to my lifestyle (as a student these days, i am getting away with it too). but i wanted to get it started, so here it is. two more days until we are off to seattle to see immortal technique and it feels like it will be forever. i'll try and take pics when i'm down there. that's it for today...nap time *yawn*
